Promoting Conservation Through Responsible Tourism
At the Nature Conscious Tourism Initiative (NCTI), we are dedicated to conserving the Cozumel raccoon (Procyon pygmaeus)—one of the rarest mammals in North America. With fewer than 250 individuals left in the wild, this species is facing immense threats from habitat loss, human-wildlife interactions, and the impacts of tourism.
Right now, no formal efforts exist to educate visitors about the threats facing the Cozumel raccoon. This lack of awareness leads to harmful human-wildlife interactions, including feeding raccoons, pollution, and habitat destruction. Your donation directly funds critical conservation research and outreach to fill this gap.
Ongoing Projects Your Donation Supports:
Mexican Raccoon SEO Project – Ensuring accurate information about Mexico’s endangered raccoons appears in online searches.
Tourist Knowledge & Engagement Study – Understanding visitor perceptions and behaviors to improve conservation messaging.
Educational Methods Analysis – Identifying the most effective ways to teach tourists about the Cozumel raccoon and ensure appropriate human-raccoon interactions.
Upcoming Research Initiatives – Including direct observation of tourist-raccoon interactions and studying the impact of human food on the health of common raccoons (Procyon lotor).
